Why does my knee hurt and what can I do?

The knee is the largest joint in the body supporting almost the entire body weight. It joins the femur and tibia in a hinge joint, which means that the movement is linear with no rotation. The main components of the knee are:

Ligaments – connect the femur to the tibia, stabilise the joint and control alignment

Cartilage – provides cushioning at the end of the femur

Menisci – (meniscus) are pads of cartilage on top of the tibia that act as shock absorbers

Patella – kneecap, which protects the front of the knee as it flexes

Tendons – that attach the muscles of the leg to the bone around the knee

Knee pain can be caused by acute injury or degeneration due to overuse or ageing. Common forms of knee pain are due to:

Knee Injury to the Ligaments

Ligament injuries

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) or Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) injuries are most common.Normally caused by twisting or hyperextension of the joint

Grade 1: Minor sprain

Grade 2: Minor tear

Grade 3: Severe tear or complete rupture

Cartilage Damage to the Knee

Cartilage Damage

Caused by overuse, degeneration, wear and tear.Smooth cartilage at the end of the femur becomes rough and pitted.

Most commonly associated with Osteoarthritis.

Leads to stiffness, discomfort and pain in the joint.

Treatment of Meniscus Tears and Bursitis

Meniscal Tears

Can be caused by overuse or acute trauma.Lateral horn or medial horn can be affected.

As you age your meniscus gets less rubbery, drier and more brittle, therefore increasing the risk of damage.

Sometimes a flap can break off and if not surgically removed will severely impede the joint movement.

Hold it if it Hurts!

Whether it’s a bump, a strain, a muscle tear or even a broken bone, what is the first thing you do when you hurt yourself?

Knee Pain Management Solutions Elbow pain related to Repetitive Strain Injury - RSI RSI or Carpal Tunnel Wrist Pain Treatment

You immediately grab hold of the bit that hurts. The management of the injury over the next hours, days and weeks may well differ but everyone’s initial reaction to pain is the same: clutch it, cradle it, hold it.

Why is this?

Quite simply, we don’t know. Theories range from affecting the pain receptors to providing a tourniquet-like effect for nerves and blood vessels to isolating the damaged structures and preventing further movement.

Whatever the reason is, we all do it.

Clearly, it would be impossible to spend all day holding your injury, which is why we at Active650 have come up with a range of super-comfortable supports that clutch, cradle and hold for you.

You get on with your life while Active 650 holds the bit that hurts!
